New Cartoon Blog!

OK Blogfans - if there are any of you left... I have a new blog set up just for my Cartoons. Rather than go back through a year's worth of blog and remove all references to non-partisanship, I decided to ask my more decidedly political stuff - Cartoons and accompanying Editorials - to please take it outside!

The new blog is simply titled FG Cartoons, and is at http://fgcartoons.blogspot.com , with no reference in the name to dailiness or weekliness or any other schedule commitment. The plan is to do one a week, but I already have another one halfway finished, so we COULD possibly get to more than one a week. After all some very topical and timely jokes won't be funny in two weeks!

The plan is to release them on Sundays, but the first one is out today, and it is entitled "Remodelpublicans". Go enjoy it, or hate it, or whatever... But drop me a comment either way.

And if you have agreed to disagree with me , or would just rather remain ignorant of my more controversial opinions, feel free to leave your computer tuned to this site, where I will resume my previous tone of inclusivity and civility and general non-offensiveness wherever possible.

Censored!

My previous post regarding Miley Cyrus's Non-Nude Photo was composed primarily at the Airport, where I do most of my internetting, but after leaving the airport I realized I couldn't remember which part of which version of the post I had used. Yes, I actually edit this garbage; you should see how bad it is beforehand!

Anyway, as I cruised homeward, I realized that I wasn't positive that the final draft didn't still have chunks of previous drafts left in it when I clicked the "publish" button, which could cause the post to not make any grammatical sense, and not be funny. Well, I couldn't have that, so, before going home, I swung by the public library and pulled up the page to make sure that I hadn't ruined a good idea by posting it half-finished.

As it turns out, I hadn't. The post was cohesively written, and made perfect sense, I looked forward to it drawing approving chuckles from the world. *BUT* - There were a couple of tiny Capitalization and punc.tuation errors that I decided to take care of anyway. I corrected those little problems, and went home to bed, happy in the knowledge that my post was perfect, and I needed only to wait for the approving comments to come rolling in, along with job offers from The Onion and Comedy Central.

But little did I know that forces beyond my control had manipulated my post, rendering it meaningless and unfunny while I slept.

That night, while at work, I checked up on the world's goings-on via my handy-dandy Mobile-Web-2.0-enabled cellphone, and there, in my RSS inbox was my post. I read it, and was astonished to find that there were words, and parts of words, missing! After all the double checking, I had still managed to publish an uncorrected version.

Then I realized that the only thing removed from my post was the word "naked", all three times I had used it. "She is obviously naked in that picture" became "She is obviously in that picture". "Covering up your nakedness" became "Covering up your ness" Your ness? Ness, is not funny, nakedness is! Darnit, Naked-censors, you ruined my funny! My lovingly crafted funny.

At first I blamed Google, because the blogspot.com domain where TDBotD is hosted is run by Google, and because, well, why not! Thoughts of defecting to WordPress or some smaller host flamed through my mind. I don't need your free hosting, Google, if you are going to ruin my funny while my back is turned!, I thought. I'll dump you like I dumped Flickr, see if I won't!

But then I thought, Waitta-dadgum-minutt! I posted the final version of that post from the Monteagle Public Library! From one of the most protected, censored, monitored and locked-down computers outside of the Pentagon!

To even use the computer at the Library you have to get a passcode from the circulation desk, which grants you a 59-minute and 59-second, and counting... session at the PC, which, like most library computers, was donated by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation around 2001, pre-loaded with Microsoft-approved software that may not be removed, manipulated, or tampered with in any way, ever! I am actually surprised the Library didn't pull a page from the Scummy Gas Station playbook, and make you ask for a key, which is attached to a tire iron, or a baseball bat, or a cinder block, so you don't run off with it.

After getting your passcode and taking your seat In the children's section, next to The Bearenstein Bears Eat Judy Blume And Some Fried Worms, you may then use the computer, provided you don't need to access any information on a CD, DVD, FlashDrive, or anything else other than a 1.44 MB Floppy Disk. (It was good enough for your Old Man back in 1996, and it'll dang well be good enough for you!)

You also have to click on an agreement page when you first sign on that says "Even though we make every attempt to block any information about nakedness, guns, drugs, liberals, communism, unicorns or other inappropriate material from this computer, the information available on the internets is very, very naughty, and if you are the sort of person that doesn't want to see naked pictures of Miley Cyrus's right shouder, then you should probably turn back now, and if you are scarred for life by a Paris Hilton Hardee's Commercial or a Rap Video, then you can't say we didn't try to warn you."

...Or something like that; I didn't read the stupid thing, I just clicked the "OK" button under something about "a claim on your immortal soul".

Besides, I didn't have to worry about any of that legal mumbo-jumbo, I just needed to borrow the computer so I could zip off a quick story about Naked Pictures of a 15-year-old. From the Children's section of the Public Library. What could be wrong with that?

When I put it like that, I guess I should just be glad that I wasn't tackled to the ground by FBI agents in the parking lot, and forcibly sterilized with a Tazer before being put in a squad car with a special flashing "Kiddie Perv on Board" sign, and shown "what they do to your kind in lockup".

Anyway, I have now re-inserted all the not-really-dirty words that the library computer removed, and if you were wondering why that post seemed a little disjointed, well, now you know... The Rest Of The Story.

Good Day!

Reader Responses: TDBotD, Now Ad-Free!

I thought that I had removed Google's Adsense Ads from my blog a while ago, but I was recently informed by a reader (Thanks Sweetie!) that my between-the-post ads were still there, and when doing a post that mentions the words "thongs" "buttocks" and "pubic hair", the ads can be for some things that maybe I don't want advertised on my site.

Plus, absolutely NO-one was clicking on the dang things, so, the ads are Outta Here!

Thanks to all the Folks who gave props to the new site design. I will probably be continuing to tweak it for the next couple of months, before settling on something for the blog's 1st Anniversary on the First of July.

Have You Voted?

There are, as of this writing, 10 hours left to vote in what I believe is the best TDBotD poll, ever!

Those of you who get this blog via e-mail will probably get this too late, but for RSS or Atom Subscribers, make sure you click through to vote on...

Which Candidate Would Make The Best New Flavor of Ben+Jerry's Ice Cream?

I have done roughly a poll a week for almost eight months now, and this one is my favorite. I put a lot of thought into it. You may vote based on which Presidential Candidate you like best, OR which Ice Cream sounds the Yummiest to Eat.

Please Keep in Mind - The future of absolutely nothing in particular is riding on your decision. (freeing, isn't it?)

Do your Readerly Duty, Go Vote! or Comment. Or Both.

America's Got Comments!

Well, I've got comments, and I live in America, so.... There! My Title is Logically Proven.

Just a quick shoutout to my recent commenters on The Daily Blog of the Day. We have had a little cross-talk in the comment threads this week, and I want to go on the record as encouraging that sort of thing. If you haven't been reading or participating in the comments, then you are missing out a little.

If you flashback to my previous post about Magicians/Quick-Change Artists David And Dania, Liz had some great links, in the comments section of that post, to YouTube video of Vocal Genius Terry Fator, who was the eventual winner of the America's Got Talent grand prize. He is referred to as, and refers to himself as, a Ventriloquist, but I think this is underselling himself just a little. I appreciate a good ventriloquist as much if not a lot more than the next guy, but Mr. Fator's act transcends ventriloquism.

When he belts out tunes by Roy Orbison, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Kermit The Frog, Garth Brooks, Nat and Natalie Cole and Etta James, he is doing more than Ventriloquism. He is singing sometimes very difficult vocal material in the voice of the original performer, without showing the slightest trace of effort or strain on his face. Most non-puppet-wielding singers would have veins popping out of their heads reaching for some of the notes he goes for.

So feel free, if you haven't clicked through to the site lately, to go check the comments out. You might learn something. Also, if you leave a comment, and want to keep up with others' responses to it, then click the little box when you leave it that says "e-mail me future comments on this post", or something to that effect. That way when someone responds to your comment with "yeah, you rock!", you can pop back with, "nuh-uh, YOU rock!", or something more intelligent about schroedinger's cat.

I Hear Ya, Man.. I Hear Ya.

Just a quick note to everyone who has commented on my blog this... year.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I don't have a lot of time with access to an internet-enabled computer lately, as evidenced by the fact that my blog has been substantially sub-daily lately. So I don't get to respond to comments left by you wonderful readers in a timely manner.

However, I did want to take this opportunity to say that I do Read all of your comments, and quite frequently within a few minutes of your posting them, and they are all appreciated. I receive your comments on my cellphone, but unfortunately responding to them is problematic if not impossible on the go.

So to Art, Becky, Liz, Jeremy, and Valorie, Thanks for commenting recently.

And to Karina, Thanks for commenting and subscribing!

And to Dad, thanks for emailing me, and maybe someday you will figure out how to comment. And set the clock on the DVD player.

And to Michelle Russell.... Holy crap! what are you doing reading this? I'd better start watching what I say, 'cause I have no idea who's checking in! Glad to hear from you, too!

Also A quick "shout-out" to Eva and "Jimmy", and the Pools, who all came to Mitch-Fest 1, and who are almost certainly not reading this, but as per the line above, I figure I'd better cover my bases.

A List, For Your Perusal

I didn't just stop blogging for a while there last week. I stopped looking at my stats, too. so when I first checked back in I was surprised to find these results. For convenience I have grouped them by type. There are a few oddball terms in there, that I will have to explore further. For now, make of this chart what you will.

I Can Haz Daily blog of Day?

Today, in keeping with my recent tradition of being too busy to post anything of worth, I have decided to outsource my writing to some cats. For only a few grams of catnip these little dudes will write anything! I didn't get a chance to proofread it, though, so if there are any spelling errors, just let it be.. they're cats, OK, not English professors! They don't even have thumbs, what did you expect?!

Escaping the Endless Cycle of Self Reference.

I have found a way around the endless cycle of self reference on this blog.

What is the endless cycle of self reference, you say? Well, it is what happens when you notice what keywords people are using to find your blog, then mentioning how funny it is that someone found your blog using those words, thus using those words again, driving more traffic to your blog with those same irrelevant keywords. A look through the old posts in this blog shows them time and time again. The "Search Engine Wrong Numbers" was a great idea, but then people kept showing up from those keywords, only now they wre linking to the even more irrelevant S.E.W.N. post!

So how do I share with you fine readers a snapshot of what is bringing people to this site, without using the words themselves?

How about a snapshot? or more technically a screenshot? Google won't index my page based on pictures of words! Computers can't read pictures of words, that's why to post a comment you have to do just that to prove you are not a computer.

So, here is a list of the things that drove people seeking knowledge to my site where, in many cases they received no knowledge whatsoever. Sorry, knowledge seekers!

Looks like my top search result was for that holiday that I wish I had invented. I did elaborate on it a lot, though, and my buddy Art even linked to it in his post about Festivus. Thanks again, Art!

What was disturbing, though was the nuber of people looking up that "Fortunate" place in my hometown. I didn't even write a post about this place, just mentioned it in the comments, and three people found my site through various versions of that search. The place named was closed down for a while (on some technicalities, court case on the more serious charge is pending) by the local constabulary after a Customer, let's call him... oh, I don't know... "John", admitted to having received... well... something that you won't find in the movies Fallen, Seven, Old Yeller', Million Dollar Baby, and Pay it Forward. (hint: Rhymes with "Sappy Mending")

So, to you lonely Truckers out there who happen on this site while looking for the "Lucky Spa Monteagle TN Tennessee", please be advised, the Police are keeping an eye on that establishment, and you don't want to end up like our buddy, "John", now do you?

Calling in Sick

After three (or is it four? I can't keep track anymore...) days of (mostly self-inflicted) Sleep- deprivation, I am calling in sick. I called in from work over at Crust, and now I am calling in sick from the blog as well.

A good evening's sleep will hopefully get me back on my feet.

See you soon, readers!

Weekly Update of the Week

Hey Readers, It's Thursday Today, and That is when we update the Poll, and the Various Headings over on the Site. If you are reading this in your Email inbox (as all the cool kids are doing nowadays), then why not click over to the site and poke around at the various goodies scattered around the place.

The Daily Item of the Week
This Week is The Princess Bride: Dread Pirate Edition on DVD.
(Hey, I just realized... I managed to add both Pirate and Ninja related material to my site today.)

The Princess Bride is one of My Favorite Movies, and has been mentioned in several different posts on this blog. I own it on VHS Cassette, and my copy is still in pretty good shape, but my VCR isn't, and one of these days I am going to have to replace my tape with a DVD version, of which there are FIVE. The Original, the Special Edition, the Dread Pirate and Buttercup Editions, and the even more recent 20th Anniversary Edition.

I poked around this morning through customer reviews and comments to find that the Dread Pirate/Buttercup Version is widely regarded as the one with the most awesome "Special Features" lineup. (These two "versions" differ only in packaging, sporting a masculine or feminine cover depending on your preference. If you like pink, then go ahead and get the Buttercup Edition. Just use the above link to do it, please.)

The "20th Anniversary" edition has an awesome cover, but apparently not much new behind it. Which is a shame, because the cover is really awesome.

A billion "Thank You"s to whoever used my new link when they bought a $50 book this week. You literally made me Shout with Joy when I fired up my Stats Page this morning. Give me about 1000 more readers like you, and I may be able to quit one of my two other jobs!

Together We Can Prevent Doldrums!

As of the End of November, my traffic counter looked like this:
We Did it! Together You and I kicked the November Doldrums Right in the 'Nads!

Forget what I said before... I wasn't myself; I was upset, and I wasn't thinking clearly.

We are obviously an unstoppable Doldrum-smashing machine! Together, with me Writing, and you Reading, well... Gee, kid, I reckon there ain't much we can't do in this here world!

I once again want to say a heartfelt "Thank You" to all my readers. In Knoxville, Atlanta, Vancouver, Goodlettsville, Winchester, San Diego, College Grove, Dallas, Germany, Ecuador, and Beyond (even a few folks stuck here in Monteagle and Sewanee with me!)

Thanks for reading, Thanks for subscribing, and Thanks for your input and feedback. This site doesn't work without you. Heck, sometimes it doesn't work with you either, but without you, it doesn't have a chance.

When Doldrums Attack!

OK, readers... It is clear that I have failed to excite you all with my latest "Post-A-Palooza". Or you failed yo be excited by it. Yes, that's it... You failed! Yeah, I'm gonna' go with that. In case anybody forgot my nifty little edu-taining info-graph from before, here is a section of what the end looked like. The idea was to preemptively fend off any November Doldrums that decided to come sniffing around.
<--Pre-"Palooza" Post-"Palooza"-->
As you can see from my brilliantly executed diagram, Doldrummage was not forestalled by my clever plot. I think Saturday is a bad day to Palooza on.

So, not to rub it in or anything, but you have all failed. Miserably. But don't worry, you can still make it up to me by finding a particularly funny post of mine and sending it to a friend or three. Or by sending me a large wad of cash. Either one will do.

Post-A-Palooza 2: The Madness Continues

As you can see from the above diagram, Post-A-Palooza 1 was successful in bringing my blog out of the October Doldrums. And as I always say; "If at first you do succeed, then drive that puppy 'til the wheels fall off!"

So in order to head off any potential November Doldrums, I am hereby instigating TDBotD Post-A-Palooza 2: The November Edition! It works based on a very simple concept. I can't complain about nobody Reading my blog, if I ain't Writing anything in it. So, I will now attempt to catch you up to date on every topic in the known Frankiverse. Right after lunch.

Oh, and a quick shout-out to Becky in Dallas and Emily in Germany who have joined the ranks of my e-mail subscribers. Much love to you guys.

Now, between Emily in Nordrhein-Westfalen, and Merrill in Quito, I am read regularly in 3 countries, and on THREE CONTINENTS! Woo hoo! And Tomorrow, Pinky, We Will Take Over The World!....

I Am Listed Among The Technorati.

I don't know what that means, but I am.

Not the Illuminati, The Shadowy Group that wants to (or possibly already does) rule the world; Not the Literati, that bunch that like to write, and read and review one another's books; Not the Paparazzi, who hang around on beaches with long telephoto lenses waiting for Jessica Alba to come out of her boat's cabin topless so they can take pictures...

...But the Technorati, the leaders of The Interwebs. Or the Webosphere. Or The Blogonet. Oh, you know, that thingy where all the webpages are.

Anyway I am listing myself there, which will theoretically confer some sort of benefit to me, publicity-wise. The "Technorati 100" is to Bloggetry what the New York Times Bestseller List is to Books. Everyone dreams of making it, but only the cream of the crop get there.

It is not super important now, but if I start up another blog (or two, or an entire Empire, MWAH-Ha-Ha-HAAAAhh!!) then my Technorati Profile would let people who like me (that's You, by the way) to find all my other blogs, even if they are not hosted on Blogger.

If there are any other benefits to having my blog "listed" on Technorati, I will let you know. In the meantime, there is another blog listing service called "Alexa", I think I am heading there next to see what they got.

Score!

According to Feedburner, which syndicates this blog and lets me track statistics on it, I know have a score of subscribers! (a "score" is twenty, for those of you who missed the week in school when you learned about the Gettysburg Address.)

This is up from my days of being literally daily, when my subscriber count bopped between 13 and 16. This is, I hope, a sign that you all like the new, "daily-ish" format pretty well. I haven't heard any complaints, which seems to me to be another good sign. Then again I haven't heard a lot of anything from most of you. A quick peruse through the comments will reveal the same 4 commenters over and over, so around 16 of you (if feedburner is at all accurate) have not said "hey" to let me know you are reading.

I just don't know who the score of you are... I can track site visitors in a lot more detail than I can track subscribers. I have racked my brain, and I can only confirm a half-score readers. If you are a subscriber who is not in the top 10 of the list below, post a comment to let me know you're out there, or, if you are philosophically opposed to commenting, then just zip me an e-mail!
  1. Jeremy in San Diego, CA
  2. Valorie in San Diego, CA
  3. "Mommasee" in Nashville, TN
  4. "Q" in Dallas, TX
  5. Christina in Vancouver, WA
  6. Becca
  7. Me
  8. Me again
  9. Liz in Atlanta, GA
  10. Merrill in Quito, Ecuador
  11. Dad? in College Grove, TN
  12. Ted? In Monteagle, TN
  13. Chesman? in Knoxville, TN
  14. ?
  15. ?
  16. ?
  17. ?
  18. ?
  19. ?
  20. ?
A "Score" of readers is better than a "Dozen" readers, but only four more, and then I can say I have "Dozens" of readers! Then I will be famous, and everyone will like me and,(a la Counting Crows) I will be.. Just about as happy as I can Be! Sha-lalala-lalala!

BlogDaddyFrank, Signing Out.

I Want Pepperoni And Cheese On My Tombstone!

Hey Readers!

Blogger.com (The Site that hosts TDBotD) has made some small changes to the way comments work on their Blogs. I am experimenting with these functions and need to set up a bit of a conversation to test things out.

So in observance of National "Plan Your Epitaph" Day, I am inviting you to use my comment space here to write your own epitaph. Or if that's too scary, help me write mine! Or share a funny epitaph that you have heard, or write one for someone else.

Please keep things rated PG-13, though, because I am no longer actively moderating the comments. This will allow you to engage in a real-time conversation, without having to wait for me to drive to somewhere with an internet-enabled PC to approve of what you said. I will still get to read all the comments (which I can do from my cellphone), I just won't have to approve them (which I can't do from my cellphone.) The tradeoff is that you now have to do that little "prove-you-are-a-real-human" text-entry thingy to show that you are not a Spam-bot who wants to offer me SUPER LOW $$$ REAL PREMIUM V!AG.RA PILLZ!!! Thanks, But I have all the V!ag.ra pillz I need already. Whatever they are.

The other change to this is that you can check a box when submitting your comment to subscribe to the comments for that particular post. That way you can see what others are saying in response to your insightful comment. This is supposedly crazy useful, and I hope you will all give it a try. And don't worry, you can unsubscribe from comments by email at any time; just click the unsubscribe link in the comment emails you receive.

Here is a possible example to get you started.

"Here Lies Frank Gibson - He Fed Worms While He Was Alive, Too!"

Also, you could just use any of the "About Me" lines from the past 4 months. Just change them to the past tense! Some probably work better than others, though.

So, (imitating Mike Meyers' "Coffee Talk" character:) "Tawk amongst yahselves! The Topic: Epitaphs - Discuss!"

You know whose anniversary is the day after mine?

Pete Weber's!

I know this because he read my post about MY anniversary (after the google blogsearch engine sniffed out his name in it), and sent me an email! How cool is that?

Frank –

Glad to read you celebrated your wedding anniversary with Terry and me from San Jose – sorry about the result. The next day (21st) was my wedding anniversary!
All the best,

Pete Weber

Technically speaking, that game was so late at night that it actually was his anniversary in most of the U.S. by the time it was done. Having to work on your anniversary is a bummer. Although having to go to work watching a hockey game is not so bad, I guess. Unless your team loses terribly, continuing a losing streak, which is what happened.

Well, I am going to go join my buddy Pete again, in a little more than an hour to watch (or possibly only listen to) the Preds take on the Calgary Flames. So far this season I have missed every game that we won, so I would like to break my losing streak as a spectator.

Post-a-Palooza!

Did you miss me? Well, I Missed You! In the last 10 days many things have happened, and I have not shared them with you, my wonderful friends and readers.

We-ell... That's about to change! It is 9:10 AM Central Standard Time on October 29th, and Post-A-Palooza is officially ON!

I am going to try and catch TDBotD up to speed, however many posts it takes... Are you ready for a massive overdose of Info-cational Edu-tainment? I thought Not. Well you're getting it anyway! !

Warning: Pregnant women and those with Back, Neck or Brain Injuries, Yeah that's Right, Brain Injuries, are Strongly Encouraged to seek milder entertainment elsewhere. This might sting a little. And now... Post-A-Palooza Post #1!

I basically haven't posted since I went out of town for my Anniversary. How was it? Why Thanks For Asking!
